What Is Medigap?
Medicare Supplement Insurance is a type of insurance that fills the gaps in Original Medicare. The plans are sold by private insurance companies that have been approved by Medicare. The plans are separate from Original Medicare and act as a supplement to this plan. Through Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap), you can have costs like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles all paid for.

How Does Medigap Work?

Medigap plans can be purchased by anyone who is above age 65 and enrolled in both Parts of Original Medicare. Some plans may be available to people below age 65, but this is uncommon. When you go to enroll in a Medigap plan, you may be subject to medical underwriting processes. Though, if you enroll during the Medigap Open Enrollment Period, this will not be the case.

The Medigap Open Enrollment Period begins once your Part B benefits become active and it ends six months later. During this time, there is no underwriting requirement and you must be offered Medigap coverage at the lowest cost available.

People who wait until after the Medigap Open Enrollment Period to enroll may have to deal with an underwriting process before they can get coverage. This can increase prices significantly, especially if you have underlying health conditions.
