Initial Enrollment Period

This is a seven-month period that starts three months before your 65th birthday month and lets you enroll in Medicare for the first time. If you are under 65 and you’re receiving Social Security disability benefits, you’ll become eligible for Medicare starting on the 25th month of you receiving your Social Security benefits. If you become eligible for Medicare in this way, you will be able to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan three months before your month of eligibility.

Annual Enrollment Period

This period is only available to those who are already enrolled in Medicare. AEP starts on October 15 and ends December 7 and allows you to review your current coverage and take note of any changes that might come to your plan for the following year. After reviewing your plan, you can use this period to:

  • Join a Medicare Advantage plan
  • Switch to a different Medicare Advantage, with or without prescription drug coverage
  • Drop your Medicare Advantage plan and go back to Original Medicare
  • Switch insurers
And make more changes with Part D!
